THE MANILA'S GALLEON TRADE ROUTE: THE ARTISTIC LEGACY OF FRANCISCO DE SAMANIEGO

ANA RUIZ GUTIÉRREZ

This article analyzes both the Manila Galleon´s trade route, which was used to trade with Oriental, New Spanish, and European items of high artistic worth, as well as the wealth decree of the final testament of Francisco Samaniego y Tuesta (1598-1670). This document can be used to illustrate how once deceased, a Spaniard´s possessions in the Philippines were sent to Spain. The document also contains information about a donation to be made to his birthplace, Caicedo de Yuso (Álava), which consisted of two important Philippine items: an ivory crucifix and a silver monstrance that are still in situ.
