IN EUROPE: JESUIT PROCURATORS AND MATERIAL CULTURE IN NEW SPAIN LUISA ELENA ALCALÁ |
|
One of the least explored activities of the Jesuits in the Spanish American viceroyalties is the work of the procurators who were sent regularly to Europe to attend the General Congregations of the Society of Jesus in Rome. The trip was also an occasion to acquire materials for the missions as well as devotional objects, many of which have a marked artistic value. This article analyzes the work of the procurators through a case study based on unpublished documents (ca. 1744). Beyond its specific interest, however, this case sheds light on a general practice in the Society of Jesus that can help rethink questions of the art market and taste in viceregal society. Furthermore, as a clear illustration of Jesuit internationalism, it begs one to consider broader issues of Europe-Spanish American relations and the wide circulation of objects and people in this period. |
