A NEW PROJECT FOR THE ROYAL CHAPEL OF GRANADA BEGOÑA ALONSO RUIZ |
|
The construction of the Royal Chapel of Granada as Queen Isabella the Catholic´s pantheon was by no means exempt from complications: contemporary critiques of the project drawn up by architect Enrique Egas temporarily paralyzed construction and the plans had to be reformed. This article documents the second building phase in which the most productive architects of the Castilian Late Gothic participated. This work investigates the original design and the consequences that successive changes had on it as they sought to turn it into something "royal and magnificent". My analysis reflects that no other Castilian church of this time deserved the attention of so many artists as well as of prominent figures of political relevance such as cardinal Cisneros, the second count of Tendilla and the bishop don Juan Rodríguez de Fonseca, providing a constructive history that reflects the power struggles of early Sixteenth-Century Castile. |
