ZURBARÁN AND THE ART OF STAGE

ARSENIO MORENO MENDOZA

Semiotic borrowings between painting and theatre in the 17th century have Zurbarán as one of their most outstanding users. Theatrical resources, common in the stage world, are applied in an almost mimetic fashion way by the master from Extremadura. His paintings show images codified in a stereotypical way which laid themselves to be easily identified and interpreted by the ordinary observer used to both languages.
