SAINT ANTHONY OF PADUA: AN UNPUBLISHED PAINTING BY ZURBARÁN DISCOVERED IN NORMANDY

ODILE DELENDA

An Apparition of the Infant Jesus to Saint Anthony of Padua by Francisco de Zurbarán was recently discovered in a little village church in Normandy (France) situated by the D-Day beaches. In view of its very bad state of conservation, the canvas was carefully restored and today appears as a masterpiece by the master from Extremadura. It may have been a gift from the Comte d'Houdetot (1788-1859), an important politician, who also was a painter and collector and owned several Spanish paintings.
