TENSENESS BETWEEN FIGURE AND ABSTRACTION: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN JULIO GONZÁLEZ AND HANS HARTUNG

NINA KOIDL

Julio González and Hans Hartung met in 1937. Until the sculptor's death in 1942 they shared households and studios, thus gaining mutual knowledge of their respective artistic methods and aims. In his memoirs, Self-Portrait, Hartung mentions González' help when he was making his only sculptural work: Untitled of 1938. In contrast to what seems to have been a prolific collaboration, the conversations of the two artists regarding their work were marked by deep discrepancies. The essay aims at clarifying the relation of the two artists, juxtaposing their respective positions with regard to their different origins and cultural contexts.
